Our Services
Individual Therapy
We offer psychotherapy tailored to meet the needs of your child/adolescent. With an approach grounded in evidence-based techniques, our clinicians tailor their approach to meet the needs, interests, and preferences of your child. For most children, our clinical approach primarily involves the use of behavioral and cognitive behavioral techniques, with a focus on enhancing children’s ability to understand and communicate their own thoughts and feelings.
Psychiatric Medication Management
We offer medication management from board certified psychiatrists that include adult, child/adolescent, addiction, and consult-liaison expertise. Our psychiatrists have experience in the treatment of a full scope of mental health and neurodevelopmental issues including depression, anxiety, OCD, substance use, addiction, bipolar spectrum, PTSD, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive, autism spectrum disorders and trauma- related disorders. Our psychiatrists are also well-versed in Cognitive Behavioral/Exposure Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Parent Management Training, family and couples work, as well as work with adults, athletes, young adults, executives, cancer patients, children, and those with other complex medical illnesses in a variety of settings including inpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, outpatient, and criminal legal settings.
Couple and Family Therapy
Our therapists offer couple and family therapy to address issues that affect not only the individual but the relationship unit (the couple or the family) as a whole. This form of therapy can be utilized on its own or as an addition to individual therapy and can be incredibly valuable for a wide range of experiences (infidelity, divorce, mental illness, family blending, adoption). With this approach, the relationship unit is treated as a system and the clinician works with its members together to restore harmony and balance and provide tools for effective communication. It typically requires all members of a couple/family to commit to attending a majority of the therapy sessions to work together on an issue.
Group Therapy
Group therapy can be a powerful form of therapy for individuals who have similar presenting issues. With this model, one or more clinicians will meet with two or more clients who share certain life experiences (social anxiety, bereavement, parenting adolescents, foster/adoptive parents) and lead them through evidence-based steps that target shared growth, self-exploration, the instillation of hope, and negative symptom reduction. Group therapy is effective as a standalone or supplemental therapy for most—but not all—issues. Our clinicians can help you decide if group therapy might be helpful for you.
Social Skills Development
Healthy relationships are a crucial component of psychological health, and our clinical team utilizes their unique expertise in relationship dynamics to support individuals struggling socially. For children and adolescents who are having difficulties making friends or maintaining positive relationships, we offer social skills groups. By working with our clinicians in a group environment, clients can learn new behavioral techniques and practice them with each other in a safe environment. This allows clients to develop tools they can use in real-life social situations and empowers them to feel greater self-confidence. For those who wish to develop their social skills in a more private environment, we also offer one-on-one social skills coaching. In this setting, our clinicians work with clients to develop personalized social exercises and goals based on their unique circumstances.
Assessment
Compass Therapy offers cognitive, psychological, and behavioral evaluations for children (8 and older), adolescents, and adults. Our evaluations are designed to help you understand how your brain works and thinks. To do this, we assess many different areas of functioning, including attention and memory, executive functioning (our ability to plan, organize, and make decisions), processing speed, academic functioning, and overall IQ. This information helps us understand your cognitive profile, including strengths and weaknesses. Results and recommendations from an evaluation will include targeted ways to help you in school, work, etc. and can also inform treatment recommendations.
We currently provide evaluations for the following referral questions:
- ADHD or difficulty with attention
- Challenges in work or school performance
- Educational/IQ testing
- Difficulty regulating emotions
- Differential diagnosis of mental health conditions
We are not offering evaluations to assess learning difficulties (i.e., dyslexia, dysgraphia, a specific learning disorder), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), neurodegenerative diseases (i.e., dementia, Alzheimer’s), or brain injury/concussions.
Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Assessments & Evaluations:
What is the testing process?
Our evaluations include several steps:
Free consultation: to hear about your presenting concerns and answer any questions.
Comprehensive Intake: our first appointment consists of a structured clinical interview, (i.e., in-depth history, current concerns and goals for testing, functioning across domains). This appointment can be done in person or virtually.
Evaluation: depending on age and clinical concerns, the number of hours of testing ranges. Typically, testing can take between 8-10 hours and can be broken up across several days. Smaller breaks (i.e., 10-15 minutes) and longer breaks (i.e., lunch) are factored into the schedule.
Feedback Session: after all the results from testing are scored and interpreted, a feedback session is provided to discuss results, highlight strengths and areas for growth, and to make targeted recommendations (i.e., school accommodations or modifications, therapeutic services, other interventions).
Detailed Report: written reports are provided within 1 month of the feedback session. This report includes all gathered information (i.e., from intake, testing results) and provides detailed recommendations.
What happens during the evaluation?
Testing includes many different types of activities like solving puzzles, answering questions, computer-based tasks, writing or drawing, etc. Some tasks will feel easy and straight forward, and others might feel difficult and complicated. The tasks are designed to help us understand how your brain thinks, so there is no way you could “fail” these activities.
What types of recommendations are provided?
Depending on the presenting concern and results from the assessment, different recommendations are provided, including:
· School accommodations and/or modifications
· Testing accommodations (i.e., extended time, testing in private location)
· Therapeutic recommendations (i.e., specific modality of therapy)
· Referrals (i.e., psychiatrists, psychologists, executive functioning coach, etc.)
· Strategies to promote mental health (i.e., sleep hygiene, etc.)
