Dr. Jessica Borelli

Dr. Jessica Borelli,

Clinical Director

Dr. Jessica Borelli  (www.drjessicaborelli.com) completed her Ph.D. In Psychology at Yale University and her clinical internship at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, with a specialization in child and family psychotherapy. After completing an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at University of Arizona, Dr. Borelli became an Assistant Professor at Pomona College, where she earned tenure. Dr. Borelli became a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY23547), beginning a private practice in Claremont. Seven years later, she transitioned to UCI as a tenured Associate Professor, was promoted to Professor (Full) and now directs The Health, Relationships, and Interventions (THRIVE) Laboratory. She has published over 180 articles and book chapters on topics such as mental health, attachment, and child/adolescent psychology. Her research has been funded by federal and private funding entities. In addition to academic works, she also writes for public audiences – most recently, she published a parenting book (Nature Meets Nurture: Science-Based Strategies to Raising Resilient Kids) and a book describing the relationship-based intervention she developed (Relational Savoring: Using Guided Reflection to Strengthen Relationships and Improve Outcomes in Therapy). In her clinical work, Dr. Borelli utilizes evidenced-based approaches, most often drawing upon techniques originating in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (including exposure-based therapies), Emotion-Focused Therapy, and attachment-based approaches to therapy (including those involving mentalization). She specializes in working with individuals with anxiety, trauma, eating/weight, or relationship issues, and adopts an individualized, culturally sensitive approach with all of her clients. Dr. Borelli views therapy as an opportunity for the client to share, to learn, and to grow toward health through close connection. Dr. Borelli is a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY23547).


Dr. Erika Nurmi,

Medical Director

Erika Nurmi, MD, PhD is a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist and expert in the treatment of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, including OCD, Tourette and body-focused repetitive behaviors (hair pulling and skin-picking), as well as common comorbities such as ADHD, depression, and autism spectrum disorder.

Dr. Nurmi received her doctoral degrees from Vanderbilt University and her clinical training in adult, child and adolescent psychiatry from UCLA. She is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences in the UCLA Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where she is involved in medical training and research. Her research explores genetic contributions to mental illness vulnerability and response to treatment, with over 100 publications and numerous federal and private grants. Dr. Nurmi was Medical Director of the UCLA Pediatric OCD Intensive Outpatient Program for 12 years, as well as Associate Medical Director of the Childhood OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program. She is a member of the UCLA Tourette Association of America Center of Excellence, Cares Anxiety Center, and the Brain Research Institute. At the Greater Los Angeles VA, partner to UCLA, she is the Anxiety Disorders Section Chief and the Director of Mental Health Research Training.

Dr. Nurmi has been recognized as an American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Master Clinician, serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Tourette Association of America, and has received numerous teaching awards. She is a national and international speaker in educational forums, clinician trainings, parent/patient support groups and public events, where she enjoys sharing her passion for science and medicine.

Dr. Nurmi’s approach to treating anxiety and OC-spectrum disorders emphasizes empowerment and strength. While she believes medications can be important in conjunction with other evidence-based approaches, the overarching goal is a rapid return to health with a long-term plan to minimize medications and promote healthy coping and self-efficacy.


Psychiatrists

Jessica Carr MD, MS is an adult psychiatrist with experience in evaluation and treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder, psychotic disorders, PTSD, and ADHD.

Dr. Carr received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine.  She will complete her adult psychiatry training at the UCLA and Greater Los Angeles VA residency in June 2024. 

Dr. Carr’s approach to treatment emphasizes patient centered approach and working together to achieve your goals. While medication can be an important tool in improving mental wellness, it can be used in conjunction with therapy and other evidence-based practices to help build the life you wish to see for yourself. Dr. Carr has a passion for psychodynamic therapy but is also trained in CBT and supportive therapy.


Dr. Serop Chalian is a board certified Psychiatrist who completed Psychiatry residency and Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at UCLA and the Los Angeles VA. He specializes in medication management for young adults and adults, with experience treating substance use disorders, addiction, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and trauma-related disorders. He has extensive experience working with patients with diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds and has worked in diverse settings including inpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, outpatient, criminal legal settings, and extensive experience working with athletes. Dr. Chalian values using evidence-based therapies while working collaboratively with the patient to develop a personalized treatment plan. 


Alexander Cohn, MD is an adult psychiatrist and Fellow at the UCLA-Semel Neuropsychiatric Institute, specializing in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry, a field focusing on the intersection of mental health and medical wellbeing.  Dr. Cohn has a particular interest in patients with cancer and other complex medical illness, in addition to people with physical disability. He believes that even when a patient is facing a prolonged health crisis, there must be room in life (and psychiatry appointments) for joy. Dr. Cohn has further training and interest in Reproductive Psychiatry, encompassing peripartum and perimenopausal psychiatric care. He also has an interest in LGBTQ+ mental health. 

Dr. Cohn believes that the powerful connection between physical illness and mental health requires thoughtful collaboration between patients and psychiatrists who deeply understand patients’ medical complexities. Only then, can providers integrate that knowledge to develop a thoughtful plan of treatment that honors and supports the whole patient, beyond their psychiatric and medical health. 

Dr. Cohn received his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, studying History and Literature. He obtained his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, then went to UCLA-Semel Neuropsychiatric Institute for residency and subsequently Consult-Liaison Fellowship. There, he pursued his passion for teaching, serving as the Curriculum Chief, helping to redevelop UCLA’s curriculum for resident. He has published in Academic Psychiatry, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, and co-wrote a textbook chapter in the Atlas of Psychiatry on viewing patients holistically, as more than just their diagnoses. 


Luis Gonzalez, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist with extensive experience in treating ADHD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, thought disorders, and personality disorders. He has experience working with patients of diverse ages and backgrounds, with a focus on helping young adults and working professionals navigate an ever-changing world.

 Dr. Gonzalez obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University. He received his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He then completed training in psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and the West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

 Dr. Gonzalez is proficient in incorporating mindfulness, CBT, and developmentally focused psychodynamic theory into his work with patients. He is comfortable with topics of racial, cultural, and gender-identity-related trauma. Dr. Gonzalez is experienced in exploring concepts of meaning and self-worth, societal expectations, and unlearning unhelpful trauma responses. Dr. Gonzalez prioritizes building a strong connection with his patients, working together to decide on an optimal care plan.

Dr. Gonzalez is bilingual in Spanish.


Yeun Lim, MD is a board-certified general psychiatrist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a full scope of mental health disorders including but not limited to: anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, autism, OCD, trichotillomania, excoriation disorder, and trauma-related disorders.

Dr. Lim completed her undergraduate studies at Columbia University and received her medical degree from Tufts University. She completed her General Psychiatry residency at UCLA-Olive View program and her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at USC. She has presented her research at multiple conferences and is a co-author of Kaplan and Saddock’s Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry.

Dr. Lim provides a uniquely tailored treatment plan that targets each patient’s needs and goals. She is passionate about working collaboratively with family members, schools, therapists, and other healthcare practitioners to achieve optimal outcomes while ensuring her approach to psychopharmacology is thoughtful, thorough, and evidence-based. Dr. Lim offers a holistic and integrative approach, incorporating various individual and family psychotherapeutic approaches. She believes that a good relationship between a psychiatrist and a patient is essential for the success of treatment.

Dr. Lim offers in-person care in West LA and telehealth care throughout California. She is fluent in Korean.


Weei LoAllen, MD is a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist with a specialization in working with high achieving individuals and families navigating life transitions. He has extensive experience in evaluation and treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder, autism spectrum disorder, PTSD, and ADHD.

Dr. LoAllen received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in New York.  He completed his adult psychiatry training as a chief resident at the UCLA and Greater Los Angeles VA residency. He completed his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at USC and Los Angeles General Medical Center. Dr. LoAllen is a passionate advocate for the mental health of youths and their families. At  Keck School of Medicine of USC, he served on the Strategic Plan Advisory Council for the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. LoAllen also advised on national advocacy and policy issues while serving on the American Psychiatric Association Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities.

Dr. LoAllen prescribes medications judiciously and values the opportunities to work collaboratively on all aspects of an individualized treatment plan. Dr. LoAllen is experienced in working with individuals and families from the Asian Pacific American community and welcomes clients of all sexual orientations and gender identities. He is committed to providing affirming and compassionate care to help all clients cultivate their resilience and thrive. 

Dr. LoAllen is also bilingual in Mandarin. 


Aaron Lulla, MD PhD is a third-year resident at the UCLA/VA Psychiatry resident program working under the clinical supervision of Dr. Erika Nurmi MD PhD. He earned his PhD in Molecular Toxicology from UCLA in 2016, prior to earning his medical degree in 2021 from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In 2021 he joined the UCLA/VA Psychiatry resident program as their first research track resident and currently serves as chief resident. He is involved with several research projects at the West LA VA and UCLA, as well as teaching. He was awarded the UCLA Department of Psychiatry Excellence in Teaching Award for residents (2023) and the UCLA Excellence in Teaching with Humanism award (2023). At the national level, Dr. Lulla serves as an American Psychiatric Association Foundation fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. 


Meha Semwal Smith, MD, MPH, is a board-eligible child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist offering virtual appointments only. She completed her medical degree at Colorado University, her public health degree at Yale, and her adult psychiatric residency as chief resident at UCLA and the Greater Los Angeles VA. She is currently a chief fellow at the Colorado University child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program and was recently nationally recognized for humanitarian patient care of children and families with the AACAP Catcher in the Rye award.

Dr. Smith has extensive training in difficulties arising from neurodevelopment (autism, ADHD), substance use, psychosis, and bipolar spectrum, though please note that due to being unable to offer in-person appointments that she cannot prescribe antipsychotics and controlled substances (stimulants, benzodiazepines, suboxone) which are sometimes recommended for these conditions. She personalizes her medication management and therapy approach to each individual patient and is well-versed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Parent Management Training, and family and couples work; she is currently enrolled in a three-year International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA) certification program for Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP).

Dr. Smith is passionate about helping patients from all walks of life and would be most effective for those seeking treatment for anxiety, trauma/PTSD, and depression; processing transitions, grief or loss; relationship issues; personality restructuring; people-pleasing and perfectionism; blocks in accessing joy, creativity or full potential; and migraines/chronic pain if connected to unprocessed emotions. She is currently accepting patients for weekly or bimonthly individual dynamic therapy sessions. She offers a genuine, focused partnership and a warm, encouraging connection, so that the most rapid and lasting healing can occur.  


Mani Vahidi, MD, MSHS is an adult integrative psychiatrist with experience using evidence-based treatments to treat a variety of mental health conditions including but not limited to: depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), thought disorders and substance use disorders (SUD).

Dr. Vahidi earned his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and a master’s degree in health systems from the Cedars-Sinai Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Vahidi earned his graduate degrees concurrently, as member of the UCLA PRIME-LA cohort, a select five-year leadership development and scholarship program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Vahidi completed his training in general psychiatry at the UCLA/VA Psychiatry Training Program, where he served as a chief resident. Dr. Vahidi is board-eligible and is pursuing further training in Addiction Psychiatry through the UCLA/VA Greater Los Angeles Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Dr. Vahidi draws on an extensive background in clinical and medical research and is the co-author of several peer-reviewed research publications. Dr. Vahidi has presented his research at multiple conferences and is featured in multiple medical journals, including the Journal of Addiction MedicineAddiction, Substance Use & Misuse, and Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Dr. Vahidi uses he/him pronouns and is fluent in Farsi/Persian.


Psychologists & Therapists

Odalis Berto is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who obtained her MSW at Arizona State University, with an emphasis on families and child welfare. Odalis has 25 years of experience helping children, adolescents and adults of multi-cultural backgrounds in medical settings and private practice. She also has expertise working with individuals who are experiencing depression, anxiety (including OCD), ADHD and difficulty adjusting to new and chronic medical diagnoses. She employs culturally competent supportive counseling and evidence based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In addition to providing psychosocial support to individuals, Odalis has clinically supervised social workers in the area of chronic illness care management and assisted in establishing the memory disorders clinic at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. She also works with clients who have experienced human rights violations and have been displaced from their countries of origin, utilizing empathy, creating a therapeutic connection and actively listening to their stories to address adversity and facilitate adjustment.

Odalis is a bilingual Spanish speaking therapist.


Isha Bhatt is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC9892) working under the clinical supervision of Dr. Jessica Borelli (PSY23547). In 2017, she received her M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. Prior to joining Compass Therapy, she completed her clinical internship at an acute psychiatric care facility where she treated; depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse disorders, and psychiatric disorders in children, adolescents, adults, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community through crisis intervention. Currently, she is a counselor for the University of California, Irvine (UCI) supporting first-generation/low-income students who hold various identities. She is also a study coordinator for the THRIVE Lab working on a relationally-focused intervention for clients receiving residential treatment for eating disorders. Isha values a collaborative, culturally-sensitive therapeutic process; therefore, she consults in a number of evidenced based practices, such as Family Systems Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma- Focused CBT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It is her privilege and honor to help clients reconnect with themselves. 


Dr. Ava Casados obtained her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Yale University. She then completed internship training at the University of New Mexico children’s hospital and the New Mexico VA, and she completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She has extensive experience helping children, teens, and young adults cope with challenging circumstances, including stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. In addition to being a licensed psychologist, Dr. Casados is a trained scientist and artist. She integrates these skills into therapy by selecting only the most scientifically supported treatments, and creatively tailoring them to fit each individual’s needs. Her approach is collaborative, supportive, and culturally-sensitive. She creates a safe, stigma-free space for clients to explore and alter negative patterns, process painful experiences, and grow comfortable and confident enough to face future challenges with strength and resilience. 


Dr. Melanie Delanoy has been a licensed clinical psychologist for more than 20 years. She graduated with honors from UCLA and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona. She completed a post doctoral fellowship at the UCLA Medical Center where she remained for more than 10 years working in inpatient and outpatient hospital settings as well as being involved in NIMH funded research. Dr. Delanoy works with children, adolescents, adults and the elderly in treating a variety of psychological issues including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, family conflicts and parenting challenges. She has extensive training and expertise in the treatment of eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Orthorexia, OSFED, ARFID) where she has consulted and worked internationally and is passionate about working from a HAES (Health at Every Size) perspective. Dr. Delanoy has found the most consistent success in challenging unwanted thoughts and behaviors using Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT), which encourages the client to build skills in between therapy sessions, though she is also qualified in multiple evidence-based therapeutic modalities including Family Based Treatment (FBT, Maudsley Method). Dr. Delanoy is also currently undergoing the Bredesen ReCODE training program to support individuals and their families experiencing cognitive decline and is certified to administer and score the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Dr. Delanoy’s primary focus is about helping her clients establish healthy perceptions of themselves while strengthening their relationships with others. She values working with physicians, dietitians, psychiatrists and school counselors as a collaborative treatment team. She understands the importance of establishing healthy family environments, especially when working with children and adolescents. Dr. Delanoy believes therapy is a collaboration of the client’s expertise of their life experiences and the therapist’s expertise of mental health.


Alyssa Dykstra is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT149987) under the clinical supervision of Renee Garett (LCSW61926). She earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University in 2024. Alyssa’s clinical training at California Family Institute grounded her in Narrative Therapy, which she used to support adolescents, individuals, couples, and families facing a range of challenges including life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm, and substance use. Alyssa also interned at New Directions for Women, a trauma-informed substance treatment facility, where she conducted assessments and led group therapy sessions, drawing on Narrative Therapy, mindfulness, and DBT tools. Her interest in the connection between chronic pain and mental health led her to become a certified Reiki Master, enhancing her holistic approach to therapy by integrating mind-body techniques. Alyssa values collaboration and inclusivity, striving to create a safe space for healing and meaningful conversations.



Dr. Melanie Fox is a licensed clinical psychologist in California, New York, and PSYPACT states. She completed her doctoral training at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium and her clinical internship and post-doctoral training at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She was previously an attending psychologist at CHOC and the Clinical Director of the Eating Disorders Program at Children's Hospital at Montefiore. She is currently living in New York and is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Montefiore Medical Center. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, and young adults with eating and feeding disorders, anxiety, relational concerns, and chronic medical conditions. She values a collaborative approach to therapy and tailors her treatment plans to meet the needs of patients and families using a number of evidence-based approaches, including Family-Based Treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. By providing a safe space to cultivate healing, Dr. Fox hopes to help her parents develop skills and tools to cope with life stressors, identify what is important to them, and build meaningful connections in their lives. 


Renee Garett is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing therapeutic services to adults, children, adolescents, and families with 15 years of experience working with clients. Renee graduated from the University of Southern California where she earned her Bachelor's Degree. She then continued her education at the University of California, Los Angeles where she completed her Masters Degree in Social Welfare (MSW). Renee has worked in various capacities as a therapist; at the Child and Family Guidance Center, in several Los Angeles schools, at Women Helping Women Counseling and Support Services, at Lamp Community in Skid Row, and in private practice. Renee previously worked as a Clinical Supervisor and the Co-Coordinator of the Adolescent and Child Therapy Program at the Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills. Renee has been trained and certified in several evidenced based treatment models (i.e. Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Seeking Safety, and Managing and Adapting Practice-for those experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and disruptive behavior disorders). Renee also specializes in supporting clients through difficult life transitions, parenting challenges, and is an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist. Renee worked for several years as a Lecturer at the UCLA School of Social Welfare  and now is a Lecturer at UCI. She is currently a clinical supervisor to unlicensed therapists.


Dr. Gerin Gaskin is a Registered Psychological Associate (#4023408) working under the clinical supervision of Dr. Jessica Borelli (PSY23547). Dr. Gaskin obtained her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Claremont Graduate University. Before joining Compass Therapy, she worked with adults and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for almost 10 years.

 She specializes in working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families with ASD, anxiety-related disorders (including OCD), depression, and relationship issues. She values the therapeutic relationship and aims to foster close connections by providing a safe space where people can learn, enrich themselves and their relationships, and feel empowered. Dr. Gaskin implements individualized treatment plans and uses evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (including exposure-based therapies, ACT, DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (for couples, complex trauma, and social anxiety), attachment-based approaches (Attachment-Based Family Therapy and Mentalization-Based Treatment) and Family Systems Therapy. Dr. Gaskin views the therapeutic process as an opportunity to form strong relationships, work collaboratively, and grow in meaningful ways.

Currently, she is the study coordinator at the THRIVE Lab (University of California, Irvine) and is working on a study investigating the impacts of a novel intervention for parents of children with ASD and ADHD. She enjoys volunteering for her nonprofit, See Beneath, Inc., where she incorporates research-backed strategies into engaging media content to help young children with ASD practice critical developmental skills and all children learn about emotions. 


Dr. Mariam Ibrahim completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Arizona State University, with an emphasis on clinical child and health psychology. While in graduate school, she completed clinical child assessment and therapy rotations at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She then completed her clinical internship at the UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and post-doctoral fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Dr. Ibrahim has extensive experience and passion working with children, teens, young adults and families. Dr. Ibrahim specializes and enjoys working with anxiety, OCD, trauma, somatic symptoms, adjustment to life stressors, depression, and relationship/interpersonal stress. Dr. Ibrahim flexibly uses evidence-based modalities backed by research to guide her treatment, adapting the approaches to each individual’s needs. She is trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Dr. Ibrahim’s clinical work and research has focused on factors that promote resilience in the face of stress, the role of family relationships in the process of risk or resilience, and mental health care as essential to overall emotional and physical wellness. 

Dr. Ibrahim is also bilingual in Arabic.


Dr. Kelly Kazmierski is a licensed psychologist who received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern California and completed her clinical internship at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center. Dr. Kazmierski is also a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California, Irvine, who has received NSF and NIH funding to study how secure parent-child and romantic attachment relationships promote health and well-being in the face of stressors.

Dr. Kazmierski's clinical work focuses on fostering strong relationships and promoting resilience for individuals, couples, and families under stress. Dr. Kazmierski uses cognitive-behavioral (CBT, ACT, DBT, CPT) and emotion-focused (EFT) therapies to help adults and adolescents change their relationship with painful experiences and emotions, build meaningful relationships, develop new skills for facing stressors, and lead more fulfilling lives. Her work with couples and families utilizes evidence-based approaches (e.g., Emotion-Focused, Family Systems, and Integrative-Behavioral) to interrupt destructive patterns and promote attuned connections. Dr. Kazmierski believes that a strong therapy relationship fosters a client's own wisdom to not only solve problems but also build a more meaningful and connected life.


Jeff Kashou, LMFT, brings over 14 years of experience working as a clinician to Compass Therapy. With a strong background in mental health and a passion for advocacy, Jeff has dedicated his career to supporting individuals, couples, and families across all ages. He has served on the board of directors for CAMFT, actively championing the needs of therapists and accessible mental healthcare. Jeff's experience is extensive. Having worked in outpatient, residential, IOP, and incarcerated settings, he understands diverse mental health challenges and the needs of various populations. Previously, he led large multidisciplinary mental health teams for the County of Orange and most recently serves as Director of Clinical Product at a leading mental health tech startup.


Jeff's approach to therapy is collaborative and client-centered. He tailors interventions to align with a client's unique goals and preferred style, emphasizing the development of skills that can be used in other areas of life for lasting impact. He utilizes mindfulness practices, CBT, DBT, family systems therapy, solution-focused therapy, and gestalt therapy to address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship and family issues, grief and loss, life transitions, and substance use. Jeff prioritizes creating a safe and supportive space where clients can feel understood and empowered to navigate life's challenges. Beyond his clinical experience, Jeff is passionate about fostering emotional well-being in diverse communities. He is the published author of a children's book that promotes pride and resilience in families of color facing discrimination. He also engages in volunteer work both locally and abroad.


Dr. Sheila Modir is a board-certified Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychologist at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She received her master’s degree in Social Welfare (MSW) from UCLA and her Ph.D. in Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychology from UC Santa Barbara. She completed her doctoral internship at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and her postdoctoral fellowship at CHOC. Dr. Modir has extensive experience utilizing evidence-based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), when working with children, adolescents, and young adults who experience depression, anxiety, trauma, and difficulties coping with stress. In addition to scholarly articles, Dr. Modir has written an award-winning children’s book called The Proudest Color, focused on cultural pride, emotion identification, and self-esteem. She has been interviewed on several occasions for television, radio, and podcasts about trauma and resilience, and consults on film and television productions, including for Disney and Freeform, to ensure that mental health is portrayed responsibly. She is passionate about advocacy and reducing mental health stigma and has advocated at the state and federal level for better mental health care policies, in addition to doing international work with refugees for the Red Cross. With clients, Dr. Modir works collaboratively with individuals and families as they work toward healing, growth, and cultivating resilience. Dr. Modir is also bilingual in Farsi.


Dr. Eric Proffitt is a licensed psychologist specializing in therapy for children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. He earned both his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Azusa Pacific University and completed his clinical internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute & Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed post-doctoral fellowship training at the Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center & Harvard Medical School and at CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County. He has extensive training and experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults with acute and chronic medical conditions. In addition to expertise with medically ill patients, Dr. Proffitt has training and experience working with youth across a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, and problems adjusting to life challenges. He also has unique clinical and research interests in working with patients and families navigating the psychosocial challenges associated with pediatric cancer treatment, survivorship, and end of life issues. Dr. Proffitt values a collaborative therapeutic relationship to help children, adolescents, and young adults navigate their unique challenges. He aims to create a safe and supportive space for clients to feel heard and understood, identify their goals, develop skills to cope with life’s stressors, and feel empowered to live meaningfully.


Hi, my name is Okairy Rodriguez and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with 13 years of professional experience. I graduated from the University of Southern California with my Masters in Social Work in 2011 and obtained my LCSW in June of 2015. I am bilingual and conduct therapy in Spanish and English via telehealth services. I've had the privilege of assisting individuals and families through various challenges and transitions, fostering resilience and growth along the way.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, and I am trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused therapy, trauma-informed care, grief and loss counseling, and mindfulness techniques. I believe in the power of these modalities to help clients develop coping skills, process difficult emotions, and create positive change in their lives.

In my practice, I specialize in working with couples and families who are facing significant life changes or transitions. Whether it's adjusting to a new family dynamic, coping with loss or trauma, or navigating relationship challenges, I provide a supportive and empathetic space where clients can explore their emotions, strengthen their relationships, and develop effective coping strategies.

Outside of my professional career, I cherish spending time with my husband, son, and two dogs. Family is at the heart of everything I do, and I am grateful for the love and support they provide. In my free time, you can often find me exploring my community, one coffee shop at a time. I believe in the importance of connection, both within my own family and with the community around me.


Dr. Sarah Ruiz is a licensed psychologist who completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Minnesota’s Institute for Child Development. She completed her clinical internship at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, and her post-doctoral fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. She has extensive experience treating depression, anxiety and trauma in children and adolescents using evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescents (IPT-A), and is certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). In addition to working with children and teens with anxiety and depression, she has a passion for working with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, as well as serving chronically ill youth and their families by providing support with new diagnoses, adjustment to treatment, and managing health behaviors. Dr. Ruiz is a bilingual Spanish-speaking psychologist who utilizes a culturally-sensitive, collaborative and empathetic treatment approach with clients to support their goals and healing journey.


Mohammad Shahisaman is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT #143964) under the clinical supervision of Alexandra Strait (LMFT 134312), specializing in supporting individuals, couples, families, and minors navigating trauma, anxiety, substance use disorders, and relational dynamics. With an integrative approach that combines evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT with experiential and systemic therapies, Mohammad offers a therapeutic space that respects each individual’s story and cultivates the capacity for healing and growth. Therapy, as Mohammad views it, extends beyond words; it invites exploration into the body, emotions, and lived experience. Whether engaging with a young person managing family tensions or an adult encountering life's turbulent phases, the therapeutic space is designed to foster safety, understanding, and empowerment for meaningful transformation. The process focuses on uncovering the patterns that shape experience and developing practical tools for resilience and authentic change.


Dr. Patricia Smiley earned her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Dr. Smiley spent 33 years as a tenured Professor of Psychological Science at Pomona College and is an expert on development, parenting, and attachment relationships. Dr. Smiley is a registered Psychological Associate (#94025938), supervised by Dr. Borelli (PSY23547). She is trained in evidence-based therapies including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) for youth and adults. In keeping with her training as a developmental psychologist, she works with children, adolescents, and adults on issues of anxiety (including OCD), depression, and family relationships, to reduce symptoms, increase functioning, and help clients build self-awareness and self-compassion. With clients, she provides a safe environment for sharing painful experiences, finding meaning in them, learning new skills, and working collaboratively on growth.


Lauren Smith is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (#1198) specializing in therapy for children, adolescents, young adults, and families under the clinical supervision of Renee Garett (LCSW61926). She holds a Master of Education in School Counseling and Psychology, with an emphasis in Clinical Counseling, from Chapman University. Lauren has extensive experience as a therapist for Beach Cities Health and as a school counselor in South Bay and Newport Beach.

Trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based counseling, Lauren uses a person-centered and trauma-informed approach. She incorporates mindfulness techniques to help clients develop emotional regulation, reduce stress, and build resilience. Her specialized training in Restorative Practices helps her resolve conflicts and rebuild relationships. 

Lauren is passionate about addressing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, LGBTQ+ issues, and family conflict. She has experience conducting assessments, providing group support, and coordinating programs like Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to promote positive outcomes.

Dedicated to empowering clients, Lauren fosters resilience and offers personalized strategies for growth. She collaborates closely with clients to help them develop healthy coping skills and move toward positive change in their lives.


Dr. Hannah Steinberg is a licensed clinical psychologist. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science from Tufts University with majors in Psychology and Child Development. She completed her doctoral training at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium. and has primarily trained in hospital settings including McLean Hospital, Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and Children’s Hospital Orange County (CHOC). Dr. Steinberg has extensive experience utilizing evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Family Based Treatment (FBT) for eating disorders. She enjoys supporting children, adolescents, and adults struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, family conflict and parenting challenges, eating disorders, and relational issues. She has also received extensive training in psychosocial and neuropsychological assessments, and finds value administering these batteries as a tool to help with treatment.  Dr. Steinberg prioritizes modalities that honor culture and diversity, incorporate values-based work, as well as those that allow her to build genuine relationships and utilize humor and levity when appropriate. She is committed to creating a collaborative, supportive, and helpful space to for individuals to find and sustain meaning, strength and resilience in their life.


Alexandra (Ally) Strait (she/her) is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT134312). In 2019, she received her M.S. in Counseling with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University, Northridge. Prior to joining Compass Therapy, she worked at a community mental health agency where she treated; depression, anxiety, and trauma in children, adolescents, adults, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community through crisis intervention, family counseling, individual counseling, advocacy, and group counseling. Ally then began providing individual counseling for high-risk children and teens treating depression, anxiety, trauma, and various other disorders in a Children’s Full-Service Partnership program in the San Fernando Valley. Currently, she is a school-based therapist working with school aged children with various emotional and behavioral challenges. Alexandra most often draws from cognitive-behavioral (CBT), attachment based, and trauma-focused therapies (e.g., CPT, TF-CBT) when working with clients. Ally believes in a collaborative, empathetic, culturally sensitive, and strength-based approach to counseling that encourages her clients to gain a sense of empowerment and fulfillment in their lives.


Dr. Naomi Tabak is a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 26153) with years of experience treating adults with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major mental illness. Dr. Tabak received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Miami in 2012 and completed an APA-accredited predoctoral internship in the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and University of California, San Diego. She then completed a clinical post-doctoral fellowship in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery at the San Diego VA and an NIMH-funded research post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA. From 2016-2022, Dr. Tabak served as Director of the SMU Psychology Clinic and Co-Director of Clinical Training for the doctoral program in clinical psychology at SMU in Dallas, Texas. In 2022, she moved back to Southern California, where she works as the Training Clinic Director in the Department of Psychological Science at UCI.

Dr. Tabak specializes in working with adults and applies an open and culturally humble approach to her clinical work. She utilizes evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches. Dr. Tabak is also a registered provider of Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD. 

Behavior Therapists

Ashley Griffith received her Dual Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminology, Law and Society from the University of California, Irvine. Ashley previously worked as a Behavioral Technician at Autism Interventions and Resources, Inc. and is currently a study coordinator for the THRIVE Lab, a study manager for the Culture, Relationships, and Health Lab, and a respite healthcare provider. Her research and clinical experience includes guiding participants through mindfulness and savoring interventions, data cleaning heart rate variability and impedance physiological data, and administering physical and behavioral therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy. Her research interest is in developmental psychology, specifically the mental and physical health of children with autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. Ashley's academic goal is to attain a masters in Behavior Analysis to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Dale Donckels serves as our business manager and is here to help and answer any questions you may have regarding billing and insurance.  Dale received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy, and served as an Air Force Combat Search and Rescue helicopter pilot on active duty for ten years.  He then transitioned to the Air Force Reserves serving another ten years as a college admissions counselor and evaluator for candidates applying to the Air Force Academy, while also working in fields related to mental health and aviation.  Dale earned his Master of Science degree in International Relations from Troy University. 


Angela Boatwright recently received her Bachelor's in Psychological Science and Urban Studies from University of California, Irvine. Angela was the lab manager for Dr. Jessica Borelli's lab THRIVE while at UCI, and is currently Compass Therapy's office manager. While at Compass, Angela is working towards her Masters in Social Work at Columbia University where she attends virtually so that she can continue to live in California. In her previous career as a photographer, documentary director, and producer, Angela worked with a diverse group of people throughout the years, including many celebrities, and she even directed a film that appeared on Netflix.
